Rosemary essential oil
Aadrea Rosemary essential oil is derived from the aromatic herb Rosmarinus officinalis. The plant (nowadays called Salvia rosmarinus) is of the family Lamiaceae, and the oil is obtained through the process of steam distillation.
The oil is a colourless to pale yellow or greenish yellow liquid. Its scent is Aromatic, balsamic, cineole-like, more or less camphoraceous.
The main active component(s) in a typical oil sample are: 1,8-Cineole (38 – 55%), Camphor (5 – 15%), β-Pinene (4 – 9%), Camphene (3 – 6%), Borneol (1-5%), Limonene (2-4%), Linalool (0.3-2%) and others.
Indications (benefits from use of product):
Rosemary essential oil is a herbal extract / product. It possesses cytotoxic, antioxidant, anti-carcinogenic and cognition enhancing properties.
1,8-cineole is known for its mucolytic and spasmolytic action on the respiratory tract, with proven clinical efficacy. 1,8-cineole has also shown therapeutic benefits in inflammatory airway diseases, such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Camphor has a wide variety of topical uses due to its antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties. It can be used to treat skin conditions, improve respiratory function, and relieve pain. Camphor offers lots of health benefits which include digestive problems, nerve problems, inflammation, cold, congestion of the airway, and various other issues that are a daily affair. It also helps in increasing blood circulation, stimulating hormones and reducing osteoarthritis.
β-Pinene has a number of pharmacological activities reported, including antibiotic resistance modulation, anticoagulant, antitumor, antimicrobial, antimalarial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-Leishmania, and analgesic effects.
Camphene has known ability to potentially target skin conditions like psoriasis and eczema. Other studies promote camphene as a potential anti-fungal and antibacterial agent. camphene has potential in regulating cardiovascular health.
Limonene is beneficial for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-stress, and possibly disease-preventing properties. It has been found to have strong anti-cancer properties in clinical trials.
Borneol is a powerful immune stimulant. It is often used to treat respiratory, digestive and circulatory concerns, to relieve muscles and joint pain and as an antibacterial and anti-fungal oil.
Linalool has good sedative anti-inflammatory anti-anxiety and analgesic properties.
How to Use
Stimulate Hair Growth: Rosemary oil may combat certain types of hair loss, including male pattern baldness and patchy hair loss (alopecia). Rosemary oil mixed with a carrier oil, rubbed into their scalp twice daily for at least six months, has benefitted some users achieve the same increase in hair thickness as those who used minoxidil (Rogaine), a common hair regrowth remedy.
Inhalation: The oil is beneficial to the immune system and may benefit brain function, stress relief and increased concentration. Add 2-3 drops in handkerchief, place over nose and inhale. Using a Diffuser/Humidifier: Use three to six drops in diffuser of choice with clean water to generate the vapour.
Aromatherapy: Rosemary essential oil is used in aromatherapy, to relieve joint inflammation and improve blood circulation. Carrier oils are vegetable oils which reduce help the oil get into the skin, reducing the concentration without reducing potency.
For every 3-6 drops of rosemary essential oil, use at least 5ml of carrier oil (Olive Oil, Coconut Oil, Jojoba Oil are excellent local options of carrier oils). Blend with carrier oil of choice prior to massage to minimize any skin sensitivity.
Other Uses
Bug Repellent: For deterring harmful insects that may bite you or infest your garden, consider rosemary oil as a natural alternative to chemical products. It has a very long repellent effect on Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, which spread the Zika virus. A dilution of 12.5% rosemary oil can repel 100% of the mosquitoes for 90 minutes.
Furthermore, as an air cleanser, Rosemary oil is beneficial in perfumes and odorizers.
Cosmetic use: Because it’s an anti-inflammatory, it has the ability to address a range of skin issues, including puffiness, redness, and swelling. Also, as noted above, rosemary’s promotion of blood circulation improves the elasticity of skin and keeps it looking healthy.
Side effects and management in event of misuse/ingestion:
Drinking concentrated rosemary oil can give rise to a range of health risks, including upset digestion, kidney damage, bleeding of the uterus, and even skin issues like sun sensitivity and increased redness.
Before Use:
The undiluted oil is unsafe to take by mouth. Taking large amounts of rosemary can cause vomiting, uterine bleeding, kidney irritation, increased sun sensitivity, skin redness, and allergic reactions. The oil should not be applied to broken skin. Rosemary oil might make seizure disorders worse. Those with this particular condition should not take the oil.
Avoid using the product if pregnant, nursing or are hypertensive. Seek medical guidance before use for medicinal purposes.
Aspirin allergy. Rosemary contains a chemical that is very similar to aspirin. This chemical, known a as salicylate, may cause a reaction in people who are allergic to aspirin.
