Clove Bud essential oil and Clove Bud Extract

Clove bud oil, and Clove extract are high-quality products from the dried buds of Syzygium aromaticum, also called clove, which belongs to the Myrtaceae family.

Identification:

Clove bud essential oil is yellow to clear brown, with a characteristic spicy odour. The main active component(s) in a typical oil sample are eugenol (75 – 85%), eugenyl acetate (7- 15%), β-caryophyllene (2 – 9%), and others.

Indications (benefits from use of product):

Clove bud extract is a herbal product. It possesses great biological activities, such as antinociceptive (analgesic) applied to relieve toothache and joint pain, antibacterial, antifungal, insecticidal and antioxidant properties, and are used traditionally as flavouring agent and antimicrobial material in food, as an anti-carcinogenic agent due to its antioxidant properties and potentially as a chemo-preventative agent.

Eugenol is responsible for insecticidal, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, wound healing, antiviral, antioxidant, and anticancer activity of clove bud oil.

Eugenyl Acetate exhibits antibacterial, anticancer, antimutagenic, antioxidant, and anti-virulence activity. It is also larvicidal, insecticidal against malaria mosquitoes Aedes aegypti and has exhibited potential antifungal activity against Candida spp in trials.

Β- Caryophyllene exhibits high antioxidant activity; and has demonstrated antimicrobial, anticarcinogenic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anxiolytic-like, and local anaesthetic effects, and anticancer properties, including against prostate, breast, pancreatic, skin, leukaemia, lymphatic, and cervical and colon cancer, in laboratory trials.

Uses:

Food preparation: The strong antioxidant, antibacterial, and antifungal properties of Clove bud extract make it a viable agent for preservation of food, aside from being an excellent condiment/spice. As low as 1% concentration has been credited for inhibiting growth of moulds and fungi in bakery products, an antibacterial agent in cheese production (1kg clove oil per 200L of raw milk), extending the shelf life of pre-cooked on-shelf foods (using a 5% concentration on weight-on-weight basis), decreased bacterial count and reduced hydroperoxide formation in Meat, Poultry, and Seafood Products (5% weight on weight concentration) thereby extending the shelf life of products and minimising economic losses. The antimicrobial properties of Clove bud essential oil can prevent fungal spoilage in vegetables and adverse health effects, and it can serve as a potential alternative to chemical fungicides (2% weight on weight concentration).

Burning some clove-scented oils or incense after cooking can help soak up the offensive odours and replace them with a more pleasant scent. Clove bud essential oil can add a dimension of taste to some otherwise bland foods too.

Recreational uses: In the Indo-Bali market, the traditional cigarettes, or kreteks, are made with clove oil as a main ingredient, and are considered to be generally lower risk than that from classic cigarettes (less nicotine, less tar), and better flavoured.
