Eucalyptus globulus essential oil

Aadrea Eucalyptus globulus essential oil is extracted from the stock of the tall flowering trees part of Eucalyptus blue gum tree, of the Myrtle family (Myrtaceae), from fresh leaves and twigs through the process of steam distillation.

Identification:

Eucalyptus globulus essential oil is a yellow to pale yellow liquid, with an aromatic characteristic odour of Cineole, and with a somewhat harsh, camphoraceous odour, and woody sweet undertone. The active component(s) in a typical oil sample are: 1,8-Cineole (min 60%), α-Pinene (10 – 22%), α-Phellandrene (0.1 – 1%), Limonene (1 – 8%), ρ-Cimene(1 – 2%), trans-Pinocarveol(1 – 6%), Aromadendrene(1 – 10%), and Globulol(0.5 – 1.5%).

Indications (benefits from use of product):

Eucalyptus globulus essential oil is a herbal extract/product. In combination with other active ingredients, the oil has been used to treat pulmonary tuberculosis, diabetes, asthma and used as a disinfectant, antioxidant agent, and antiseptic agent. Further, the application of the essential oil has been known to impart some benefit from the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, wound-healing, anxiolytic activities of the active substances.

1,8-cineole is known for its mucolytic and spasmolytic action on the respiratory tract, with proven clinical efficacy. 1,8-cineole has also shown therapeutic benefits in inflammatory airway diseases, such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

α-Pinene possesses potent anti-inflammatory effects, which could impact diseases like arthritis, Crohn’s disease, and Multiple Sclerosis. Also, due to its impact as a bronchodilator, pinene may help manage symptoms related to bronchitis, asthma, and even COPD.

α-Phellandrene is known to increase energy levels, reduce pain, and as an anti-cancer. In addition, it a common additive in cosmetic products and perfumes due to its pleasing aroma, and easy absorption in the skin.

Limonene is beneficial for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-stress, and possibly disease-preventing properties. It has been found to have strong anti-cancer properties in clinical trials.

ρ-Cimene has been observed to possess antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiparasitic, antidiabetic, antiviral, antitumor, antibacterial, and antifungal properties. trans-Pinocarveol was also found to possess excellent antioxidant properties.

Aromadendrene has potential therapeutic uses as an anti-bacterial agent, synergizing with the terpene cineole and enhancing their antibacterial effects. It also possesses anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antidepressant properties; and is an anti-cancer terpenoid. Globulol has been confirmed to possess strong antimicrobial properties.

How to Use:

Aromatherapy: Eucalyptus globulus essential oil is used in aromatherapy, to relieve mental exhaustion by boosting blood circulation to the brain. A carrier oil of choice should be selected before the dilution is done. Carrier oils are vegetable oils which reduce help the oil get into the skin, reducing the concentration without reducing potency. For every 15-30 drops of essential oil, use at least 10ml of carrier oil (Olive Oil, Coconut Oil, Jojoba Oil are excellent local options of carrier oils). Blend with carrier oil of choice prior to massage to minimize any skin sensitivity.

Inhalation: The essential oil can be inhaled to relieve sinus congestion. Add six to eight drops to hot water in a bucket and use as a facial steam. Alternatively, add two to three drops in handkerchief, place over nose and inhale.

You can diffuse Eucalyptus globulus essential oil in the bedroom throughout the night to clear nasal passages and to help eliminate harmful airborne bacteria that contribute to the feeling of being unwell.

Cleaning agent: Eucalyptus globulus essential oil can be used to remove grease and grime, making it an excellent cleaning product for the kitchen. It may also be mixed-in with homemade hand soaps and laundry detergents. Added to natural homemade sprays as a cleaning agent, it can be used for washing toilet bowls, floors, countertops, and windows, just to name a few surfaces. The clean scent makes an effective fabric freshener, and it can be mixed with Lemon or Tea Tree essential oils, diluted with water, then applied to odorous materials such as the insides of shoes. Furthermore, as an air cleanser, Eucalyptus globulus essential oil is beneficial for eliminating mould that could contribute to respiratory issues.

Cosmetic use: Use to nourish hair, Eucalyptus globulus essential oil helps moisturize an itchy scalp and remove dandruff flakes.

Antiseptic: For use on wounds, cuts, burns, bites, stings, and sores. Besides soothing the irritated skin, it can relieve pain, protect any openings from becoming infected, and promote faster healing. Added to warm baths, Eucalyptus globulus essential oil’s analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties help to rejuvenate stiff and sore muscles.

Before Use:

Raw essential oil concentrates should not be ingested or applied through oral ingestion. Pregnant and nursing women are particularly cautioned to avoid using the essential oil without medical guidance.

The oil should be applied topically (on external surfaces of the body), and preferably diluted; using the oil directly or in high concentrations can potentially cause skin irritation. A skin test is recommended prior to use. Eucalyptus globulus oil must never be used near the eyes, inner ears, or on any other particularly sensitive areas of skin.

The oil is generally safe for use on adult skin but should never be applied to the face of infants. Individuals who suffer from allergic sensitivities could potentially experience skin irritations with the use of Eucalyptus globulus essential oil, which could be uncomfortable, and potentially dangerous in higher exposure amounts.

Essential oils are volatile and lose their potency when exposed for long periods to oxygen and direct sunlight. Store the oil in its original sealed container, in a cool and dark space.
